What does the title mean?

A tachyon is a hypothetical faster-than-light particle. A wake is a vessel’s trail—and the aftermath it leaves behind. The Tachyon Wake brings those ideas together: faster-than-light travel and its consequences.

How did it begin?

Inspired by the adventure and strange worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Venus series, I typed an idea into Google: set aside the restrictions on faster-than-light travel and design a spacecraft. Gemini helped develop that idea into the fictional 5C engine and the beginnings of this universe.

Why the robots?

I wanted a place in fiction for my real 3D-printed robots. Pip began as a helpful, smiling character in my comics about selling on Etsy; I liked him so much that I printed him. The Tachyon Vanguard gave those creations a story to inhabit.

to Starships

A brief conversation with Jeffrey Jay. The questions below come from an imagined interviewer inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs—not the historical author. Jay’s answers are edited from an actual interview.

Imagined Burroughs: What set you on this adventure?

Jeffrey Jay: Reading your Venus series. The adventure and the strange worlds captured my imagination.

Imagined Burroughs: And how did you begin building a universe of your own?

Jeffrey Jay: With an idea I typed into a Google search box: ignore current theoretical restrictions on faster-than-light travel and design a spacecraft. Gemini took it from there—and here we are! I chose to set aside the light-speed restriction in my fiction and imagine the 5C engine.

Imagined Burroughs: Why give that spacecraft a story?

Jeffrey Jay: I wanted to put my very real, 3D-printed robots into a story. The Tachyon Vanguard series created a place for them.

Imagined Burroughs: So part of this imagined universe already exists on your desk?

Jeffrey Jay: Yes! Pip first appeared in an illustration for my comic-book series about getting better results selling on Etsy. Pip was a helpful, smiling “thing,” perfectly suited to my 3D printer. I liked the character so much that I printed it.
